The Horsley Eye Clinic is a general
ophthalmology practice specializing in anterior-segment surgery. Changes in medical reimbursement
throughout the medical industry have necessitated a growing importance to efficiencies in office
layout in the planning of new facilities. Program requirements of this 3,200 sq. ft. build-out of
the Medical Office Building include six exam/consult rooms, a special procedures room, surgical/treatment
room, business office area, waiting room, multi-access rescheduling room, employee lounge, visual
field room, and other support spaces. Key to the design concept has been implementation of a separate
rescheduling area where one staff person can process three patients in separate contiguous areas,
without congesting the waiting room or reception desk area. The layout efficiency is also assisted
by programming otherwise unused corridor and exam room corner spaces for additional treatment, storage,
and video education space. With two doctors, the practice has been able to comfortably handle over 100
patients a day.
